Every figure is public, sourced and current, shown in euro. Where a source published in another currency we say so and convert at £1 ≈ €1.16. The gap is not a mindset problem — it is arithmetic, and arithmetic can be changed.

Fig. 02 — Causes

Four reasons the gap opens. None of them are you.

In your twenties the gap is barely 13%. By your fifties it is 44%. This is what happens in between.

01

Lower pay, compounded

A 12.8% pay gap does not just mean smaller payslips. It means a smaller percentage contribution on a smaller number, every month, for forty years.

02

The break nobody budgets for

36% of women take a career break to raise children, against 3% of men. Five years out at 35 costs roughly €80,000 in pension savings.

03

Part-time, under the threshold

Nearly a third of women in the EU work part time, against under a tenth of men. Fewer hours means fewer qualifying years and, in most schemes, no employer top-up at all.

04

Cash as the default

Women are as likely as men to invest through a workplace pension and far less likely outside one. Save first, invest later — and later rarely arrives.

“I left €24,000 in a savings account for nine years because I was waiting to feel qualified. Nobody was ever going to hand me that qualification. That is the gap this is for — not information, permission.”
